A complete art collection for a house on the Algarve coast, developed alongside the architecture, before the building is even finished.
A building that already knows what it is.
The house sits on the cliffs at Gale, on the Algarve coast, a striking piece of contemporary architecture by Vasco Vieira Arquitectos, all cantilevered floors, glass, and light off the Atlantic.
Our client brought Atrium into the project to build a complete art collection for their future home. From the outset, the guiding principle has been clear: every work should respond to and enhance the architecture by Vasco Vieira, creating moments of its own without ever competing with the building.
The vision, in full.
A vision of the residence as it will be realised, an extraordinary contemporary home shaped around dramatic volumes, uninterrupted sightlines and a sequence of spaces that descend with the cliff toward the sea.
This is what we are collecting for. Every decision we make is measured against it.
Being built as we plan.
At this stage, the house is still taking shape, a concrete structure on the headland, before finishes, furnishings and final surfaces define the interiors. It is the ideal moment to begin understanding the architecture as it will actually be experienced: the natural light, the sightlines, the scale of each wall and the way the spaces connect.
Our role now is not to make a polished final selection, but to map the collection into the building from the outset. We are identifying where key works may live, establishing the scale and character each space can hold, and considering how paintings, sculpture and commissioned pieces can be integrated with purpose rather than added once the house is complete.
A diversified collection, built with intent.
Working from a defined budget and brief, we are building a considered collection that brings together significant acquisitions, emerging talent and original works created by Atrium specifically for the property. Each piece will be selected or conceived in response to the client’s ambitions, the architecture and the role it will play within the wider collection.
Several of the largest paintings will be produced on site before the final interior finishes are completed, allowing Atrium to create works at a scale that would otherwise be impossible to introduce into the building. Alongside these major commissions, we are sourcing exceptional artists from around the world and across Portugal, while identifying sculpture and installation opportunities for both the interiors and the surrounding grounds.
The result will be a diverse but cohesive collection that feels inseparable from the house, giving purpose to its extraordinary walls, creating moments throughout the property and helping realise the atmosphere, identity and character our client imagines for their home.
